Are you a currently pregnant runner and wondering what you’ll need to continue running through your pregnancy? I was fortunate to be able to run through my entire first pregnancy and maybe half of my second (thank you, debilitating symphysis pubic dysfunction.)
It goes without saying that you really shouldn’t do anything physically that your doctor doesn’t clear you to do. Also, embarking on a new physical activity is not something you should do while pregnant. But if you are just looking for ideas on what items you might need to have a great running experience while you’re pregnant, read on.
Supportive Running Pregnancy Belt
You won’t need a running belt early on in your pregnancy, but when you do, you will know unequivocally. I wore this Gabrialla Maternity Support Belt and it held up well through both pregnancies. It is easily adjustable and did not chafe me even when I got every sweaty.
ID Bracelet for Runners
Even if you are not pregnant, a Road ID is an essential part of any runner’s toolkit. You can add your name, emergency contact information, medications etc. so that first responders know the best way to help you should an emergency arise while you are out on your runs.
Running Water Bottles
Hydration is super-important, especially during pregnancy. A handheld water bottle is a must-have to stay hydrated during your runs. I personally the Nathan Speedshot Plus handheld water bottle. You can read my full review here.
Electrolyte Drinks
Water does a better job at hydrating when there are electrolytes involved. I have been using Nuun Sport Tablets for many years and will mix some up in my handheld water bottle on hot summer days.
Energy Chews or Gels
I had a couple of instances during my pregnancies where I probably didn’t eat enough and experienced some blood sugar crashes. Energy chews were a lifesaver for me, and I highly recommend you carry them on your runs or even keep some in your purse for just in case. These energy chews from Honey Stinger are easily digested and most importantly, delicious.
Maternity Leggings with Pockets
If you’re a leggings person, you will want to purchase a few pairs of maternity workout leggings with pockets. These have room to stash your keys and phone so you can listen to music and call a friend if you need to bail out during a run because you’re too tired or need to go to the bathroom.
Leak Proof Underwear
Speaking of needing to go to the bathroom, it is no secret that a growing baby can push on your bladder at the most inopportune moment. These Bambody Leak Proof hipsters are absorbent enough to catch unexpected leaks and sit low enough under your belly to keep you comfy on your runs.
Relieving Pelvic Pain During and after Pregnancy: How Women Can Heal Chronic Pelvic Instability
Pregnancy hormones loosen up your ligaments, and this can cause pelvic pain and discomfort for many pregnant people. Even though Relieving Pelvic Pain During and After Pregnancy is not specific to running, it is a fantastic resource to help you make movement adjustments to lessen any aches and pains you might experience. I learned how to roll over in bed like a pro thanks to this book after dealing with a few weeks of excruciating pain while turning over at night. (If you know, you know.)
