If you follow me on social media, you know that I completed the Napa Valley Marathon a couple of weeks ago after six months of focused, intensive training. So when I was sent Punch Gunk Muscle Therapy right before my marathon taper, I could not wait to try it.
Punch Gunk Muscle Therapy Active Recovery Bath Soak is a bath salt formula designed to help athletes and fitness enthusiasts recover after intense workouts. It contains a combination of all-natural ingredients, including magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt), aloe, and vitamin C that work together to provide a relaxing and therapeutic bathing experience designed to reduce inflammation, fight free radicals, and moisturize the skin.
Per their packaging, here are the benefits of the main active ingredients:
- Magnesium sulfate: fights free radicals and builds antioxidants
- Aloe: reduces inflammation and moisturizes skin
- Vitamin C: Promotes collages production and increases fibroblast generation
Each package comes with four single-use pouches that dissolve in the bathtub in about 30 seconds. The scent is very subtle. Normally I am very sensitive to strong scents, but this didn’t bother me. One thing that surprised me is that it is bubbly! I expected to have to throw some bubble bath to create a more relaxing experience, but that was not the case. I was able to just get the water running and my bath was ready to go as soon as the tub was filled up. Since it comes in dissolvable pouches, there is no need to measure the product and it doesn’t become clumpy like regular bath salts.
I used this product after my last few long runs during marathon training and after my marathon. Normally with Epsom salts I am very painfully aware of all my chafed spots when I get in the tub, but with Punch Gunk I felt only the tiniest bit of irritation. This is where the product really shines in my opinion: it is very nourishing for the skin. I did not feel the need to lather on moisturizer after my bath like I normally would with Epsom salts.
I soaked between 20 and 30 minutes each time, listening to a good audiobook. The instructions on the packaging did not have a recommended soaking time for best benefits, so I just went for however long it took for the water to cool down. I always felt very relaxed and my muscles felt a little bit looser after a soak.
Is Punch Gunk Muscle Therapy a miracle product? No. But it was an effective tool in my recovery arsenal after long, hard efforts. Combined with proper-ish nutrition, stretching, gentle walks, and foam rolling I was moving pretty much at my normal clip within 48-hours of my marathon. If you are a person who understands the importance of recovery to ensure you’re always running at your best, Punch Gunk Muscle Therapy is a great product to try.
